  • Story line
  • Israeli beauty queen Linor Abargil was abducted and raped in Milan, Italy two months before being crowned Miss World in 1998. Ten years later, she's ready to talk about it, and to encourage others to speak out. Now a globe-trotting victims' advocate, Linor encourages others to stand against sexual violence by putting an end to their silence. She travels to speak with teens in South Africa, where girls are statistically more likely to be raped than educated. For victims of sexual assault, the journey toward wholeness never ends; still, Linor Abargil, the BRAVE MISS WORLD, continues her unflinching efforts to keep the nightmares at bay.

Movie Reviews

As a husband and father of two daughters, this film naturally had a strong impact on me. It's the story about Linor Abargil, a woman who was crowned Miss World back in 1998...only weeks after she was raped. But it's not a story just about her victimization but about her taking control of her life. Abargil has made it her life's calling to publicize her story and use her celebrity status to lecture and meet with rape victims all over the world. Throughout this wonderful and brave film, you see her meeting with various victims around the world, such as in South Africa, the US and Italy...as well as in her native Israel. She gives inspirational talks that encourage victims, both men and women, to come forward and break the silence. Their stories are very touching and makes a huge emotional impact. But in addition to being inspired, the film will occasionally make you angry. Prosecutors who told rape victims to drop the charges because the accused it 'cute', fraternities that chant and laugh about rape as well as offenders who SOUND convincing and sincere when they proclaim their innocence...all these are bound to shock you and make you angry. This is definitely a film to watch along with a box of Kleenex...as well as with your loved ones-- especially your teens. My only regret is that I wish this film had been available back when I used to be a psychotherapist, as most of my clients were sexual abuse victims and really could have benefited from Linor's story.

Technically speaking, this film is what you'd expect. It's well edited and makes a very strong impact on the viewer. I sure hope to see more from Cecelia Peck, as she expertly directed this terrific documentary and, like Linor, showed a lot of courage to make such a film. See "Brave Miss World"...and if you live here in the States, you most likely can, as it just debuted on Netflix's streaming service.

Movie Reviews

Well, to begin, I cannot remember the last time I could not get up at the end of a movie. I literally could not rise up from my seat. My body felt as though it were being weighed down by something considerably larger and heavier than myself... History had it's way with me( I am an African American woman). Thank you Mr. McQueen, Mr. Ejiofor, Ms. Nyong'o, Ms. Paulson and others, and yes, even Mr. Fassbender. I am not a film critic nor a movie hobbyist, although I try to stay current, but what I am is a human being trying to understand the various problems and issues within our country. This movie is a potent reminder of why we are where we are as a society today. How man can be so unflinchingly cruel to his fellow man, especially if he looks, speaks or behaves differently, I will never understand.

Movie Reviews

One of the Greatest Films of All Time

I know many of you, out there will disagree with me, when I say that Schindler's List is one of the greatest film that there has ever been. It does sound that I'm extremely overrating it, but I truly believe that Schindler's List is up there with The Godfather and Citizen Kane I mean everything about is so good, that its close to perfection.

The acting is brilliant, every actor does an amazing job. Liam Neeson as Schindler is incredible, no doubt about it. He should of won an Oscar for Best Actor. Ralph Fiennes is the one, who truly is the best actor in the film. He plays his antagonist role as Amon Goeth, so well that it is a travesty, he didn't win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

I'm happy though, that the Academy chose this film for Best Picture, it was one of the best decisions they ever made. Because if this film wasn't considered Best Picture by the Academy, I don't know which film would be, expect maybe for The Godfather.

Steven Spielberg certainly deserved an Oscar for Best Director. It was a smart idea for Steven Spielberg to make this film in black-white because it made the movie more bleak, emotional, hopelessness. But you see small patches of color -- A candle and a child's coat bringing the evilness of the tragedy into a agonizing focus.

There's no doubt about it, this film will be a classic in decades, even hundreds of years to come in cinema. This film is without a doubt, the Best film that Spielberg has ever made. With many other Steven Spielberg's classics like Jurassic Park,Jaws,E.T, Raider of the Lost Ark, Saving Private Ryan, etc. Schindler's List will always be Steven Spielberg's most finest, important film. He blends his humanism to the tragic horror of the Holocaust to create an emotional masterpiece.

Eisenstein in Guanajuato (2015)

BiographyComedyRomance | 18 June 2015 (Netherlands)

Director:

 Peter Greenaway

 Peter Greenaway

Story Line

The venerated filmmaker Eisenstein is comparable in talent, insight and wisdom, with the likes of Shakespeare or Beethoven; there are few - if any - directors who can be elevated to such heights. On the back of his revolutionary film Battleship Potemkin, he was celebrated around the world, and invited to the US. Ultimately rejected by Hollywood and maliciously maligned by conservative Americans, Eisenstein traveled to Mexico in 1931 to consider a film privately funded by American pro-Communist sympathizers, headed by the American writer Upton Sinclair. Eisenstein's sensual Mexican experience appears to have been pivotal in his life and film career - a significant hinge between the early successes of Strike, Battleship Potemkin, and October, which made him a world-renowned figure, and his hesitant later career with Alexander Nevsky, Ivan the Terrible and The Boyar's Plot.

Movie Reviews

at crossroads in Mexico
Peter Greenaway's career is beyond any ambitions of commercial success
  • his most successful (audience-wise) movies were made in the 80s. Even
then the combination of colors and music, architecture (he is an architect by formation) and composition, his obsessions for sex and death and his bluntness in approaching them were much out of the beaten track. For the last two decades his projects became more and more exploratory, with the moving images being only one of the tools in combinations of multi-disciplinary explorations and experiments that brought together almost every artistic discipline that was invented. Eisenstein in Guanajuato can be seen almost as a return to the more conventional tools of film making. It has a story, and it has a hero and it has a theme, one of these themes film makers love to bring to screen, maybe the ultimate film theme - film making!

If you listen to what Peter Greenaway has to tell about his film (and he speaks a lot as he promotes the film in the international festival tour) Eisentein in Guanajuato is before all a homage to one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema who was Sergei Eisenstein. It also is a social and political commentary, as it deals with what was probably the most exuberant, liberal and care-free period in the life of the screen director of the Soviet Revolution, and also with the sexual orientation of Eisenstein which was kind of a well known secret in his biography, tolerated by the Soviet authorities but maybe also a tool of blackmail by the KGB. The period spent by Eisenstein in Mexico while shooting material never gathered and edited for a film about the country and its revolutions may have been the happiest time in the life of the director already famous for Potemkin and October. It allowed him not only a unique encounter with a culture that was so different from some aspects yet so close from other compared with the Russian culture he knew from home, but also an encounter with himself, with his own demons, his self-denied homosexuality, his tendency to the luxury and the decadence of the bourgeois life, so different from the austerity he left in the Soviet Russia and to which he was condemned to return.

There is almost nothing in this film about Eisenstein's film making. At no point does he shout 'Camera!' or 'Action!' - at some moment he even refuses to do so. Peter Greenaway does not try to expose any secrets of the film making art of Eisenstein, but rather deals with the surrounding context that made his films possible. Finnish actor Elmer Bäck brings on screen an Eisenstein who hides his doubts behind exuberance, and his fears behinds carelessness, who is sure of his artistic genius but unaware about his personal charisma. Mexican actor Luis Alberti builds a fine counterpoint to Eisenstein's character and a credible gay love interest. The camera work does not try to replicate anything that Eisenstein has done on screen, but rather quotes and incorporates fragments of Eisentein's movies with the visual commentaries of Greenaway. I read some critical opinions about viewers 'getting tired' by the too intense camera work - I do not agree with them. When what you see on screen is expressive and interesting you cannot get tired, as one does not get tired of seeing more masterpieces in an art museum, or of listening to fine opera or classical music. Sets are as exuberant and as complex as an architect mind like Greenaway's can conceive. Overall Eisenstein in Guanajuato was for me a very satisfying and surprisingly entertaining experience.

Jesse Owens' quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler's vision of Aryan supremacy.

Director:

 Stephen Hopkins

Writers:

 Joe Shrapnel

Stars:

Storyline

After Jeremiah Mahoney successfully engineered a U.S boycott by the AAU of the 1936 Olympics, the Jewish organizer of the Games, Theodor Lewald, visited the U. S. to beg for U. S. participation knowing full well that Jesse Owens had broken 4 world records in 1935 and was expected to have outstanding achievements in Berlin, as he did. Aryan supremacy had nothing to do with it. An Aryan, Luz Long, in fact coached Jesse Owens in the Broad Jump and won the Silver for Germany to Jesse's Gold Medal for the U. S. For his entire life, Jesse spoke only favorably about Germany and its people who treated him with great respect. Blacks in Berlin in 1936 could sit anywhere on a bus; stay at any hotel, eat in any restaurant, use any lavatory. It is only because Avery Brundage, at Lewald's insistence, overcame Mahoney and the AAU and obtained a re-vote that Jesse had the opportunity to shine. The organizers of the Berlin Olympics went to extraordinary lengths to give Jesse Owens and other Negro.

Race Movie Review
'Tumbledown' Starring Rebecca Hall And Jason Sudeikis After  proving his skills as a leading comedic actor on the big screen in studio comedies like "Horrible Bosses" and indies like the great "Sleeping With Other People," Jason Sudeikis is taking the time to show off his dramatic side with slightly more serious material. Along with the upcoming Jesse Owens biopic "Race," Sudeikis will be starring alongside Rebecca Hall in the indie "Tumbledown," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year.  Sudeikis plays Andrew, a music scholar heading to Maine in order to write the biography of a late musician from the area. The only thing standing in his way is a protective widow (Hall), who agrees to the biography only if she can join as co-writer. This compromise soon leads to unlikely friendship that soon evolves into something more romantic. Starz Digital will release "Tumbledown" in New.
